Self taught is not a swear word! Yup! I said it.
I have been doing a lot of work around the words I use when I describe my business. Words I like and the doubt triggering words.
I’m sure you’ll have some of your own.
It’s that old Freud saying “words have magical power”
For years the words “self-taught” filled me with so much doubt and made me feel ashamed that I wasn’t in the position to go to college/university.
For as long as I can remember people have looked down on the self-taught, If you didn’t go to university for your chosen subject, you couldn’t be that good, right?
Wrong!
Let’s look at it from a different perspective.
A Self-taught person or “autodidact” like myself, has found a subject that they are so passionate about, that they’ve taken it upon themselves to learn.
They will have searched high and low online, they’ll have bought books, invested in online courses and practiced for years to perfect it.
Next time someone tells you they are self-taught, remember:
  • We are passionate
  • We are driven
  • We are disciplined
  • We are proud
Judge us on the work we produce, not how we learned to do it.
Self-taught is not a swear word, it’s a super power!
